The Charlatan 2008 McLaren Vale Sangiovese - less than 12 dozen remaining!
15th July, 2010 - **** Charlatan Wines entered as a Four Star Winery in the upcoming 2011 edition of the James Halliday Wine Companion- we're not sure of our individual wine ratings as yet, but our first two years as a Four Star Winery is great feedback from one of Australia's most experienced palates!
3 May 2010 - New releases! Our 2009 wines are bottled and should be available by the end of the month. And such variety for a change, we'll have something for every taste. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, a barrel fermented Cabernet/Merlot blend and a Bordeaux style Cabernet Franc/Merlot. Check our Wines page for these new releases as they become available.
10 Feb. 2010 - McLaren Vale Vintage Update - Ample spring and winter rains in 2009 have left McLaren Vale soils in a very good position leading into vintage. Although some warmer weather was felt during January, we escaped any of the 40 degree plus days that dogged us during 2009. The vines are in fantastic health, fruit quality is excellent and some white varieties are already being crushed. In the coming week, we expect sensational Shiraz and other early red varieties to be picked and, avoiding any extremes of heat or wet that Mother Nature throws at us this vintage, we are on track to record our best season since 2006. Fingers crossed!
30 Oct. 2009 - our 2008 'The Charlatan' McLaren Vale Sangiovese picked up a Bronze Medal at the 2009 Winegrapes Australia McLaren Vale Wine Show. In a large class that includes some peculiar 'alternatives' such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc plus Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Nebbiolo, Petit Verdot and Barbera.
7 Nov. 2009 - We just picked up Bronze in the Australia-wide Alternative Variety Wine Show, again no silver medals and this time no golds were awarded.
8 Nov. 2009 - We have been included in the annual Adelaide Review Hot 100 Wines for 2009! Again, for our 2008 Sangiovese - out of over 700 wines, we join some pretty big names of SA Wine... so keep an eye out for the Hot 100 mag!
2008 "The Charlatan" Sangiovese Reviews:
James Halliday, Wine Companion 2010
Well, well. McLaren Vale shiraz is easy meat, Sangiovese not, but this is a particularly good Sangiovese with classic cherry and sour cherry fruit, tannins there as ever, but not green or harsh. Screw cap, 14.4% alc. Rating 93 points. To 2016.
The Adelaide Review Hot 100 Wines, 2009
"Alluring dark floral notes and dark cherry fruit, with hints of oak on the palate. Structured and firm." Equal third in its class.
McLaren Vale Wine Show, 2009
Bronze Medal, Class 10. (No Silvers awarded, only one gold for a McLaren Vale Tempranillo) from 17 wines in class.
Australian Alternative Variety Wine Show, 2009
Bronze Medal, Class 15a. (No Silver, No Gold) from 20 Australian Sangiovese releases.
